This course is aimed at people interested in learning about the botany of trees and covers the basics for anyone interested either both as a hobbyist or as a career.
Trees form an imposing and ecologically important part of the landscape of the British Isles, but they are much more interesting if we know what we are looking at.
In this beginner course you will learn how to correctly identify deciduous trees and become familiar with the more commonly found species. The course will start by looking at features such as leaves, bark, flowers, and fruits, how they are arranged on the tree, and how these clues can be used to identify them. You will then learn how to recognise the three main types of leaf margin; how to spot the difference between a compound leaf (with leaflets) and a simple leaf; and how to understand and recognise basic botanical terms describing leaf arrangement and other useful features.
There will be plenty of time to get outside and put your newfound knowledge into practice! If you can’t tell an Ash from an Oak, this is the course for you!
As part of this course, you will need to purchase the FSC publication –Tree Name Trail before you attend, as you will be using this throughout the course. This is a great tool to use both during and once you have completed the course allowing you to continue exploring and understanding this subject.

Prior Knowledge
Knowledge of different UK trees (i.e. broadleaf vs conifer) would be beneficial, but not necessary. Just a willingness to explore and learn.
What will be covered during this course?

- An overview of deciduous trees in summer within the UK and key features
- Introduction to the three main types of leaf margin
- Introduction to and the importance of using scientific/Latin plant names.
- How to use Crib/Table of Difference to identify plants and trees
- How to identify deciduous trees using keys and reference books
By the end of the course, you will be able to:

- Identify key features of deciduous trees (leaves, bark, flowers, and fruits)
- Understand the limitations and benefits of using reference materials and the importance of personalising your own reference books.
- Correctly identify the main types of leaf margin and how they can be used to identify trees
- Use a simple Botanical Key and a Crib/Table of Difference with confidence, allowing you to identify common deciduous trees with ease
- Share this knowledge with friends, family, and fellow volunteers
The course gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in a new subject and acquire novel skills. Our fantastic tutor will combine the use of classroom-led learning and outside learning opportunities to give individuals the skills and confidence to learn more about deciduous trees.
