Into The Wild Weekend

Our fully trained tutors will help teach you the necessary skills including shelter building, fire-lighting and wild food cookery. This family course is an ideal follow-on course if you have attended our Minibeasts, Mice and Mole course in the past or if you have slightly older family who like an outdoor challenge.

Activities will include fire lighting, campfire art, skills and wild food cookery, shelter building, survival orienteering, animal tracks and signs, small mammal traps and much more.

The course will be taught by our tutors all greatly experienced at delivering high quality education to family groups.

All food, activities and accommodation are provided allowing you all to enjoy a long weekend break.

The course is suitable for families with children aged 7 – 11 years. Please note: You will be sharing a room with just you and your family.

Friday

Arrival 5pm

Welcome talk and look through the course program.

Dinner

Evening walk in search for evidence of crepuscular wildlife, searching for dusk flying bats, deer grazing in the fields as well as animal tracks and signs.

Saturday

Survival Orienteering – can you use a map to navigate around the grounds to collect the items needed to survive a night in the wild?

Shelter building- can you create a shelter for your family that would be weatherproof and animal proof?

Lunch outside on Box Hill

Continue navigating around the estate completing activities and challenges along the way,

Return to Juniper Hall for a well-earned break!

Natural art journey review- can you re- create some of the highlights, sights and challenges we have encountered today using natural materials in the Juniper Hall Grounds. What were your favourite parts of the hike?

Dinner

Team Challenges on the lawns- as a family work together to problem solve and complete our mini-challenges.

Setting humane mammal traps and footprint traps

Sunday

Open humane mammal traps and footprint traps to see what mammals have been in the grounds of Juniper Hall overnight. Open a Moth trap, if weather permits, to see what might fly at night.

Fire Lighting Skills- learn to use a flint and steel to create a spark.

Campfire wild food cookery- collect the ingredients needed to make nettle and blackberry tea.

Lunch (on site)

Try your hand using bushcraft tools to make elder beads and wooden medallions and nettle string.

Charcoal Challenge - Collect wood to make charcoal in the campfire and make charcoal pencils. use these to draw maps of the grounds to create our own treasure map and hide geo-caches for others to find.
