Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

The Life Science Centre

The Life Science Centre provides GCSE, A Level and BTEC courses on a residential or single day basis. Courses are delivered in an industrial standard laboratory, allowing students to experience what it’s like to work as a professional scientist.

Students work in teams to complete practical workplace-linked science investigations. Possible investigations include: synthesising insulin; breast cancer gene mutations; the selfish gene; hospital acquired infections; global fish stocks and DNA barcoding.

On residential courses science is combined with adventurous outdoor activities to promote enjoyment in learning, problem solving, effective communication and team working - essential for those wishing to pursue a career in science.

Courses are developed in line with the new 2015 Biology specifications to aid qualification delivery, reinforce the Every Child Matters agenda and demonstrate How Science Works.

Testimonial:

"What a great experience you gave to the students. The kit that they were able to use was way beyond what we have available in school and the whole experience was just what was needed to demonstrate the practicalities of the polymerase chain reaction and gel electrophoresis. When the question in the exam on this topic comes up, the pupils will be in a much stronger position to answer it well, having had the first-hand experience of carrying out the practical procedure and discussing the potential uses of the technology. Thank you for organising and delivering the day in such a well-planned and informative way."
