Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All


The list below shows the current Family Courses available at Flatford Mill Field Centre. Full details of each course can be found by clicking on the title.



Flatford Nature Day events held around the grounds of Flatford Mill. These are community events involving different local conservation and heritage organisations. There will be a variety of environmental and nature-themed activities on offer for all the family running from 11am - 4pm on each of the days. No booking required however a 'Nature Day Passport' will need to be purchased for £3 per child (from the National Trust car park) to access as many of the activities for free as you like!

> Dedham Vale AONB - practice your green woodwork skills and carve yourself a wooden spoon to take home with you or rely on your inner navigator for a mini map reading challenge! Tweet @DedhamValeSVP

> RSPB - activities in the wildlife garden will include Bird Behaviour (put on a mask and go out and find food), Fill a Frame (make bugs out of leaves, cones etc.), Stepping Twigs (a race with hoops & twigs) and the Nature Trail! Tweet @RSPB_S_Suffolk

> Field Studies Council - take a dip in the Mill Stream or have a peek in our freshwater tank to investigate the strange creatures living in our ponds! Can you find the animal that breathes through a snorkel? Children will immerse themselves in life beneath the surface and explore how invertebrates survive in this habitat. > National Trust - discover the 'Life, Work & Inspiration' of the famous artist John Contable in the newly opened exhibition, pop into the gift shop or enjoy an afternoon cake break in the tearooms. Tweet @FlatfordNT

> Herbaculture - Herb Walks will be running at 2pm and 3pm from the National Trust shop with medicinal herbalist, Dan Wheals. Tweet @herbaculture

> Daws Hall Nature Reserve - have a scavenge for natural and recycled materials and construct a Bee or Bug Hotel to encourage pollinators and other insect friends into your garden!

> Travels in Time - be a history investigator and delve into an archeological dig or get crafty using wool.

> Essex Bat Group - check out what the bats eat for breakfast in the moth trap, go on a bug hunt with nets and magnifiers in the meadow or make your own bat crown! Tweet @EssexBatGroup

In addition, the River Stour Trust will be running boat trips from Flatford Bridge to Dedham at an extra cost.



2018 Summer Fun Days at Flatford Mill

2018 Sumer Fun FSC Flatford Mill

These activity days will be running every Tuesday and Thursday during the Summer holidays from 10am-3pm for 8-12 year olds.

Tuesdays are free 'drop-in' sessions for children to have a go for a short period of time during the day.

Thursday session are more structured, for the entire day and must be prebooked and paid for; contact information below.

The cost will be £10 for the Thursday and will include all resources used for the activities (and waterproof hire if appropriate). A light packed lunch will be available for a supplement of £2 per day (please order when booking).

 The general overview of days available:  

  • Super Science discoverers- 31st July & 2nd Aug: Don your safety goggles and spend the day investigating Science around Flatford Mill. Can you create a rocket worthy of going into space? Or maybe make ice cream without a freezer? Have a go at this and more on this day.
  • Walk on the Wild Side-  29th & 31st May Explore Flatford’s wildlife through a variety of activities such as pond dipping and minibeast hunting. Investigate how these creatures survive, and have the chance to design your own minibeast!
  • Creative Nature-7th & 9th August: Let’s get creative around Flatford Mill and make some masterpieces using natural materials. This is a chance to take a closer look at nature’s patterns including tree rubbing, leaf printing, natural haikus and finishing in a big art collage!
  • Bushcraft Survival- 14th & 16 August: See whether you can survive a day in the wilds of Flatford honing your skills of fire lighting, shelter building and lots more.
  • Flatford Time Travellers 21st & 23rd August: Explore the history of the area with some fun practical activities and a bit of dressing up as the group consider the Romans and the Celts as well as learn abut Jhn Constable and his paintings
  • Marvellous Maps 28th & 30th August: Not only learn about maps and how to use them but also get the chance to make your own maps!
