"I feel lucky and privileged to be employed in a field of work which I love and gives me such enjoyment. I relish inspiring students and piquing their curiosity about the world around them as well as challenging their views and helping them to see nature differently. Flatford is the ideal setting for this."

Charlotte Foster - Senior Tutor

Qualifications: MSc (Dunelm) Geography and Biological Sciences, BSc (Hons) (Dunelm) Geography, PGCE (Dunelm) Secondary Geography, First aid outdoors/at work

Having completed my Geography degree at the University of Durham, I went on study Biology and Geography jointly to complete my MSc looking at the spatial habitat patterning in river environments in Northumberland. I completed a PGCE in Secondary Geography and taught secondary school and sixth form students in County Durham before moving down to join the Education Team at Flatford Mill in 2014. I have also volunteered in various education and conservation based roles, from primary school placements to wardening in forest reserves.

"Having spent a lifetime outdoors exploring, studying and sharing the wonders and lessons offered by nature, I am honoured to be able to spend each day with students to share this fascination for the environment. Not only is this rewarding personally but it is fundamental in building a sustainable, inclusive community, where our students and visitors can develop the resilience and awareness needed for a successful future."

Simon Ward - Tutor

Qualifications: MSc Freshwater and Marine Ecology, BSc Zoology, First Aid Outdoors

I first visited an FSC Centre during my A level biology to Juniper Hall. I had a fantastic time and had much admiration for the tutor. This trip further inspired my love of the natural world and helped me decide upon my undergraduate degree choice. During my masters and undergraduate, I went to FSC Millport and became reacquainted with the organisation. Since then I have always wanted to work for the FSC. I applied for and then completed the FSC Trainee Tutor scheme which was an amazing experience over the year. It then led to the opportunity to become a permanent member of the Flatford Mill Education team, working as a tutor.

“Flatford Mill is an excellent location to take in the outside world and get children of all ages to get involved in Nature, I love the combination of Nature, Art and Fun that Flatford provides.”

Hayley Trehearn

Qualifications: MSc Oceanography, BSc (Hons) Marine Environmental Science, NVQ Environmental Conservation, PTTLS, First Aid at Work

Following my studies I have volunteered for various organisations including Seawatch/ORCA, Archelon (Turtle Rescue Centre, Athens) and my local parish doing beach clean-ups. Enjoying nature and being outdoors as well as wanting to make a difference to young lives and the future of our planet naturally led me to find a career in outdoor education. I have worked for Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, Kingswood Education Centre and Suffolk Wildlife Trust . I started with the FSC in 2014 on the Trainee Tutor Scheme and have worked at other centres including Malham Tarn and Epping Forest and now here at Flatford Mill.

"Flatford Mill provides a great setting for all ages with lots to offer in terms of enjoyment and inspiration. It is a pleasure to introduce learners to this special place"
