Thank you for your interest in our course. The accommodation at the centre is full, however we work closely with the local B&Bs to offer participants the chance to attend as a non-resident and stay within the local area. If you would like to attend as a non-resident provisionally book your place on the course and then confirm your accommodation. Please contact FSC Flatford Mill for a list of local B&Bs and hotels. The non-resident price includes evening meal and packed lunch.

In this course we will aim to paint outdoors ‘en plein air’ each day, weather permitting, taking inspiration from the experience and adventure of being out in the landscape. A direct approach to watercolour will be demonstrated and some boldness encouraged. Tuition will focus particularly on the importance of observation, composition, simplification of a subject and achieving correct tonal values. Subjects will likely include buildings, foliage, sky, water and more. Jem will offer a full demonstration on any day spent entirely outdoors, then offer guidance and support to each student equally through the remainder of the day as they complete at least one painting. Note, it is the intention that we'll be outdoors at least half of each day if weather permits, so please come prepared for the typical weather and underfoot conditions of this time of year. Outdoor work will be complemented by tuition in the studio where there will be a focus on core technique and overcoming problems encountered, through demonstration, exercises and step-by-step painting as appropriate. Whilst fundamental principles and techniques will be addressed throughout, the course is aimed primarily at those having experience of watercolour but wanting to improve, particularly in terms of working outdoors. Beginners to the medium who are up for a challenge would however be welcome.

Jem Bowden is known for his fresh, direct and dynamic style of landscape painting. Working in the inspiring plein air tradition is core to his practice. As a tutor Jem is in demand to give demonstrations and run workshops at art societies, clubs and teaching centres. He tutors for London Art College and on residential painting holidays, as well as contributing to various painting magazines.
