The Firth of Clyde has influenced the industrial, social and military history of the West Coast of Scotland for hundreds of years. This wide-ranging course follows the development of the Clyde through its ages. From its importance as a major centre of ship-building, and giving rise to the term ‘Clyde Built,’ to the role of the water-body during the industrial development of Scotland and the First and Second world wars. The course will include visits to different parts of the Clyde including a maritime museum, Industrial museum, Loch Lomond, anti-aircraft battery and coastal defence locations. A trip on our research vessel will give a unique perceptive of different historical Clyde locations. This course will appeal to amateur historians who want to learn more about the industrial, military and social history of this part of the West Coast of Scotland.

Dr Phillip Cowie has lived on the Clyde for 18 years, his grandfather fought in WWII as part of the RAFs Coastal Command – first in Scotland helping to protect the coastline and subsequently in the Far East. This has fuelled his interest in the overall history of the Clyde area and the contribution that the Clyde made to both World Wars.
