A one-day workshop exploring monoprinting using three different methods that are characterised by line, tone and texture. Local printmaker Hester Cox will demonstrate these spontaneous and direct techniques and then participants will try them for themselves. There will also be the chance to print from natural material including plants and feathers. Monoprinting (monotype) is one of the most spontaneous and direct ways of printmaking with no two prints being alike. It is a great way to explore mark-making, texture and tone and on this workshop you will learn three different methods that can be used separately or combined to create really exciting images. Monoprinting often appeals to painters and those who love drawing as it adds a new dimension to an artist’s work but it is also a method that requires no previous artistic experience and is suitable for total beginners. Due to the fact that the printmaker is not investing huge amounts of time in creating blocks or plates, they are free to experiment and try out ideas. Hester will begin the class with a brief discussion of what a monoprint/monotype is, show examples and demonstrate the first technique. Participants will then have a chance to have a go themselves. The emphasis will be on making and creating with lots of one-to-one tuition and the chance for group discussion. Participants will be shown how to print by hand and also with a press. As well as using imagery from the local area, there will be the opportunity to print from natural materials such as flowers, leaves and feathers. Inks, paper and all other materials are included in the course fee however, if you have items that you wish to bring along to print with, you are more than welcome to do so. Some examples may include ribbons, lace, feathers, leaves, sketches or images for inspiration etc. but there is no requirement to bring these as Hester will have a range of items with her.
Hester has a BA (hons) in Illustration and works from her studio in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Her colourful and richly textured limited-edition collagraph prints reflect her appreciation of the natural landscape. She is a member of Leeds Fine Artists, Printmakers Circle, Printmaking Online and Ålgården Studios in Sweden. Awards include an Extending Practice Award from Chrysalis Arts in 2011, which allowed her to work with the Mercer Gallery and the British and Yorkshire Museum, and she was one of ten artists selected to take part in Mirror Images, an international printmaking exhibition, which ran simultaneously in North Yorkshire, Scotland, Finland and Sweden in 2015.
