The course aims to use the medium of watercolour to express the many aspects of the Somerset landscape. This includes visits to Exmoor, The Quantocks and the Somerset coast. Watercolour can be used to catch fleeting moments of the weather, atmosphere and skyscape, and then applied to a finished painting back in the studio. This was the practise of Turner and Cottray and their method of work is considered along with other watercolour artists of the Sublime and Picturesque period. There will be basic instruction in the studio that can be applied in the field. Nettlecombe sits in a Pastural Landscape that offers many painting opportunities. There are some basic materials provided but you will need;- -Two sable brushes size no.2 and no.5. -Red, yellow and blue watercolour paint (best to use artist quality but student quality will suffice) -Pencil -Watercolour paper in a pad or by the sheet -A jar for water and a chair for outside use if you require it. -A palette or small white plate The English weather is unpredictable so be prepared.

David Johnson is a graduate of Goldsmiths College with many years’ experience of tutoring courses to different groups.
