On this brand new course we will run moth traps along the stunning Devon Coast at sites such as Prawle Point and Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve. This course is aimed at total beginners with moths as well as those who want to go back to the basics of learning about moth families - whatever your skill level we hope to stretch you. Each morning we will visit the traps to collect live moths ready for the afternoon identification sessions. Moths in Britain might sound daunting to start with, but this course will simplify it all by identifying easier families through slide talks. Time will also be spent on choice of best field guide and moth trap to use in a garden or further afield. This is a residential two day course, based at Slapton Field Studies Centre explaining everything you need to know to start looking at moths.

Dave Grundy is an experienced naturalist and wildlife consultant specialising in bird, butterfly and moth surveying. He has a particular interest in micro moths and regularly leads training courses and public events in this Lepidoptera group, as well as in other natural history subjects. Since 2003 he has organised and administered the Garden Moth Scheme, which now covers over 300 gardens across Britain and Ireland. The scheme monitors changes in the fortunes of common moth species and uses the data as indicators of environmental change.
