FSC and Esri UK work together to help prepare for curriculum change
FSC have been working with Esri UK, the market-leading GIS company, to incorporate their ArcGIS technology into our courses. With big curriculum changes in geography and science approaching it becomes even more important that we can offer this to students visiting FSC.
From 2016 the new GCSE and GCE geography curriculum will contain more quantification skills and GIS. Skills such as creating, evaluating and analysing also become increasingly important for students to develop. GIS helps students learn to use large amounts of data in complex ways and is an excellent way for FSC to foster the development of these skills within fieldwork.
Esri UK, who also work with exam boards like OCR, work to ensure that as many students as possible are able to access their technology. Education Consultant at Esri UK Jason Sawle says: "We have trained a number of FSC Tutors to use ArcGIS Online and how to collect data with mobile devices using Collector for ArcGIS. If schools want to learn how GIS can be used in their teaching, the FSC is a great place to see it in action."
Over the next two years FSC is investing heavily in improving connectivity at all centres and also continuing to increase the number and range of mobile devices for visiting groups. A programme of further training is planned for FSC staff to continue to develop their expertise in using ArcGIS with students.
