AQA AS and A Level Geography Fieldwork

Specific geography fieldwork courses have been developed, below, for those studying A level geography for the AQA specifications taught from September 2016 onwards.

For AS Level students...

  • Complete the fieldwork requirements.
  • Cover a choice of specification content covering physical and human geography.
  • Prepare AS level students for the fieldwork exam, worth 27% of their total marks.
  • Explore the role of the geographer in a rapidly changing world.

For A Level students...

  • Complete the fieldwork requirements.
  • Give A level students the opportunity to conduct an independent investigation, worth 20% of the final A level mark.
  • Develop self-directed learning skills and thinking around sustainable futures.

The course listed below are for schools following the AQA GCE AS/A level in geography specification.

 

A Level

NEA: Independent Investigation5 day

  • Complete the fieldwork requirements for A level students within physical and human environments.
  • Students will spend time forming a geography investigation and collecting data for 3.3 Geography Investigation worth 20% of their final A level marks.
  • Support and guidance is given from FSC’s field teachers before and after students collect their data. Students will have time to visit the location of their investigation, develop their knowledge before finalising the geography investigation title. They will then collect all the data needed, with time given to reflect and improve the methodology.
  • The focus for the Geography Investigation can be drawn from any aspect of the specification, in discussion with Centre staff.

Geography Fieldwork Skills3 day

  • Prepare students for the A level independent investigation.
  • A skill based course designed to showcase a variety of fieldwork data collection methods in two contrasting environments.
  • Designed for students who will be collecting independent investigation data back in their local place, after the field course has ended.
  • Enable students to begin to develop the skills needed to undertake the Independent Investigation worth 20% of the A Level.

Please note: This course has not been created for students to independently design their investigation, nor to collect their fieldwork data for write up. 

AS Level and A Level Year One

Cycles, Systems and Changing Places - 55 day

  • Complete the fieldwork requirements for AS level students within physical and human environments.
  • Prepare AS level students for Section B of Paper 2: Geography fieldwork investigation and geographical skills, (physical and human) worth 25% of their total marks.
  • Cover a choice of physical geography specification content for AS fieldwork in 3.1 Physical geography.
  • Cover a choice of human geography specification content for AS fieldwork in 3.2.2 Changing places and 3.3.2 Contemporary urban environments.
  • For those going on to A level, this course will provide contextualised learning in inspiring real world environments to develop their geographical understanding for the A level examinations.

Cycles, Systems and Changing Places - 33 day

  • Complete the fieldwork requirements for AS level students within physical and human environments.
  • Prepare AS level students for Section B of Paper 2: Geography fieldwork investigation and geographical skills, (physical and human) worth 25% of their total marks.
  • Cover a choice of specification content for AS fieldwork in 3.1 Physical geography, 3.2.1 Changing places and 3.3.2 Contemporary urban environments.
  • For those going on to A level, this course will contribute two of the four days of fieldwork requirements and provide contextualised learning in inspiring real world environments to develop their geographical understanding for the A level examinations.
