Start at the very beginning; learn about basic tree biology and ecology and the common species we find in the UK in this introductory online course.
Trees are an important part of the plant kingdom, with their colourful leaves, acorns and blossoms surrounding us all. They provide homes and food for wildlife and also many ecosystem services for humans.
Tutor: Finn Upton
Finn has been an FSC tutor since late 2024. His subject of choice is trees and native British woodlands. Finn has worked with trees on and off since 2019, through forestry and sawmilling to rewilding and tree planting. Finn has also run tree walks since 2021 and has helped to create community-based tree ID resources around Glasgow. Academically he studied evolutionary biology at university which brought him closer to ecological history and the stories we can draw from the fossil record. He enjoys applying this to our woodlands and bringing people closer to the natural stories on our doorstep. Finn holds an inherent passion for being around woodlands, observing trees and woodworking. This is his strongest qualification in ecology – his longing to see people nurture woodlands and understand ecology so that they can protect it.
