This course is aimed at students aged 16-18 with an interest in science. It may be of particular interest to students hoping to pursue a career in biochemistry, medicine, pharmacy, biotechnology, or other disciplines with a focus on laboratory techniques.
You will spend your week at Millport Field Centre, the former Marine Research station and experience working in an industrial standard laboratory. You will be working in teams to complete workplace-linked science investigations exploring primary production and pollution. We apply several sampling and analytical techniques to investigate the impact of land-based activities on the sea. Lab work will be combined with adventurous outdoor activities such as rock climbing, archery, and snorkelling. Part of the course is also to collect freshwater samples around the island which we do with the famous cycle around the island – a 10mile round-trip with outstanding views on the panorama of the surrounding islands.
