Join us for the MCS Great British Beach clean.
Help to tidy up the beautiful Slapton Sands and help contribute to the Marine Conservation Societies national beach clean report. Challenge yourself to collect as much rubbish as you can and then weigh your rubbish and add your names to the beach clean leader board.
Parking will be free for all those taking part in the beach clean and there will be free whippy ice cream, tea or coffee for participants from the Start Bay Inn.
Why help clean the beaches?
Virtually all plastic ever made still exists, and it is believed it will take between 500 and 1,000 years for it degrade. But even when it starts to break down it does so into tiny pieces which we are starting to find in a growing number of places. Many seabirds, cetaceans, turtles and a growing number of fish have been found with plastic inside their bodies and now also inside the food we eat and in bottled water too.
As well as affecting the beach and marine life at Slapton, litter, unfortunately, makes it’s across the road and become entangled with vegetation on an area of the nature reserve we call the back slope. From here if left, the litter would eventually make its way into the Ley and cause problems for the ecosystem and wildlife that lives there. So please come and help us reduce the amount of plastic in our environment. You can drop in between 9.30 am and 12.30 pm at the Memorial (Middle) car park. Parking for beach cleaning volunteers is free and we provide bags but please bring your own gloves.
It’s a great way to spend a few hours and help keep our wonderful beach wonderful!
No booking is required.
