Come and enjoy the pleasure of portrait drawing and oil painting. Discover how to improve your portrait skills, whether a beginner starting out or have previous experience you are all welcome. I bring draftsmanship skills with a passion which I want to share, how to express yourself, be creative with practical experience. The excitement of learning new, fresh techniques, in charcoal, Ink and wash and oil on canvas. Sharing 30 years experience in four days.
Tutor: Jacob SuttonJacob Sutton has an extraordinarily quick and fluent way of drawing and enjoys the challenge of capturing the character of people in a single sitting, trying to convey not just what they look like but who they are. He has been artsit in residence at the Oxford Literary Festival in 2009 and 2015 as well as the Hay on Wye festival in 2009 and 2012. Jacob has curated at numerous exhibitions over the years and been a visiting lecturer across the UK. He has travelled extensively with his work.
Monday: The evening overview, The Journey of a Portrait, introduction to the portrait course. Bringing enjoyment and passion into your work.
Tuesday: Exploring The Journey of a Portrait. First a brief discussion full of interesting idea’s and insights into portrait drawing and painting, what are you trying to do and want. Where do you start? Bringing great draftsmanship into your own work. Using pencil and charcoal we start the journey of where to begin and why, the technique of basic drawing. We discuss looking, the focus and what are the key elements to making a great portrait. In the morning we start with pencils using A2 size 300 gsm paper. The afternoon is spent developing using charcoal.
Wednesday: We continue the morning session with charcoal portraits techniques. After lunch it is pen and ink. Here we discover the beauty of ink and wash for portraiture.
Thursday: Introduction to portrait painting in oils. How do we begin? A step by step journey explaining the craft of using draftsmanship with colour. Learning the different painting techniques, discovering what suits you best.
Friday: Your own choice today. Pick from what you have enjoyed most. Charcoal, ink and Wash or oil painting.
Before You Attend
Start and Finish Times
Resident participants are requested to arrive for registration between 1:00pm and 4:00pm on arrival day, after this time self-directed arrival information will be posted on the front door. There will be an introductory talk at 5:00pm. Supper is usually at 6:30pm. Non resident bookings should arrive just before 5:00pm. A non resident booking also includes dinner during your course as teaching does progress into the evening. Breakfast, for resident participants, will be from 8:00am. The course will end at 15.00 on Friday. On the final day please vacate your room by 9:00am, storage is provided for your luggage.
What to Bring
- 4B or 5B pencils
- Charcoal, thin sticks and compressed charcoal.
- Black ink and watercolour brushes,
- 300 gsm watercolour paper A2 & A1 size, 10 sheets
- Canvas on stretchers
- Oil paint
- Linseed oil and white spirit.
