Dates are being revised due to Covid-19
When we enjoy the experience of exploring the UK’s undersea world, a desire to capture the amazing marine life we meet on camera often follows. This doesn’t have to involve long boat rides and complicated equipment; these photographs were taken snorkelling within a few minutes walk of Dale Fort.
This course will introduce the basics of underwater photography from a practical point of view. It will concentrate on what can be done while snorkelling with a compact camera but it will also be suitable for SCUBA divers and those using more sophisticated photography gear.
There will be a strong emphasis on getting to know the animals we photograph and appreciating their lifestyles and behaviour.
Tutor: Paul Naylor
Paul Naylor is a marine biologist and underwater photographer with a passion for showing people what amazing animals live around the British coast. He is the author of and photographer for the popular book ‘Great British Marine Animals’. Paul specialises in portraying animals go about their lives and is never happier than when in a few metres of water close to a beach, camera in hand!
Evening introductory talk by Paul on marine life and photography; discussion on what people want from the course.
Talk on basics of photography, setting up your underwater camera, followed by snorkelling. This will depend on sea conditions but we will aim for a mid-morning ‘dip’ very close to Dale Fort with a longer session at a local beach in the afternoon. There will be an evening session to discuss your day’s results.
Talk on the natural history of the animals we are meeting, plans for the day. Snorkelling arrangements similar to Saturday, but building on the results and experience. Round-up evening session to look at results.
Morning talks on going further with underwater photography, and on processing and using images. Paul will be on hand to discuss your results and equipment. Depending on your plans, there may be an opportunity for a short snorkel session close to Dale Fort.
Before You Attend
What to Bring
Your own snorkelling gear and wet-suit plus a waterproof camera and light if you have one. SCUBA divers will be welcome and Paul will be on hand before and after dives, but any diving will be ‘under their own steam’ with diving safety their responsibility.
A sense of humour and an enquiring mind!
