Do you have a set of Water Soluble Pencils but are not sure how to use them? Then this one-day course is for you.
Water soluble pencils are an extremely versatile medium, combining the familiarity of a pencil with the magic of watercolour. They are the perfect medium for those yet to master watercolours, whilst retaining all the appeal of drawing and are an ideal medium for both the beginner and the more experienced artist alike. We will spend the morning tackling a range of exercises – blending colours, creating wet in wet washes, controlling brush techniques and mark making for painting skies, trees and landscape subjects. In the afternoon, you can choose to follow Carole’s step by step demonstration or paint a subject of your own choice.
Tutor: Carole Massey
Carole Massey is a popular and supportive tutor who has been teaching at Flatford Mill for nearly 20 years. She managed her own successful design partnership before returning to her first love of painting, which currently involves a combination of tutoring, demonstrations, private commissions, exhibitions, TV appearances and filming for a leading online website www.arttutor.com/artist/carolemassey. A recent portrait commission for the Bank of England of Sir Charles Bean, deputy governor now hangs in the bank in perpetuity. She is a regular contributor to art magazines and has written many teaching Artbooks, published by the award winning publisher Search Press, with international sales exceeding 250,000. Her latest books are “Drawing for the Absolute Beginner” and “The Beginners’ Guide to Drawing Portraits” which will be on sale on the course. Carole has exhibited and demonstrated at the Mall Galleries, London, and her work is in a number of private collections in the UK and abroad. She now lives in Suffolk. What to Bring
Pencils
• Bring a good colour range (minimum 18) of Artist quality water-soluble coloured pencils E.g. Caran d’Ache, Derwent Inktense pencils; Daler
Rowney “Albrecht Durer”, Aquarelles etc.
Brushes
• Nos. 5, 8 and 12 round – synthetic or synthetic/sable blend brushes are more suitable for using with water soluble pencils than softer, sable brushes.

Paper
• Watercolour paper 140lb/300gsm NOT (semi rough) approx.14” x 10” in a pad or in loose sheets e.g. Bockingford, Langton, Cotman, Canson
rather than handmade papers such as Arches, Saunders Waterford etc.
• For colour mixing and practice exercises you can use a good quality cartridge paper providing it has a “tooth” or grain to the paper e.g. W&N medium surface cartridge pad, 150 or 220gsm.
Other Materials
