This course is entirely outdoors involving walking on the estate and finding trees to identify. There will be no set route, we will be guided by what we see and choose to investigate.
We may spend some time at one tree getting to grips with the features that distinguish it from other trees. It will be entirely descriptive and is aimed at people who want to learn how to identify common trees when they are out and about in their spare time. Therefore, we will be looking to some degree and growth form but mostly at buds, twigs and bark and any other tell-tale signs.
No prior knowledge is needed, this is a day for absolute beginners.
This course is aimed at adults only and you must be at least 18 years old to attend.
By the end of the course attendees will be able to:
- Identify a range of common broadleaf tree species in winter
- Use features such as twigs, buds and bark to identify species

Tutor: Carl Hawke
Carl Hawke has worked in nature conservation in the UK and Africa for 33 years, both practically and in an advisory capacity, for Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, RSPB and National Trust. Trees have unsurprisingly always been a major part of it all, especially the magnificent veteran and ancient trees that we are lucky enough to have in the UK. He is firmly of the belief that the UK needs much more wooded habitat than it currently has, quality resilient habitats that will support diverse wildlife for centuries to come.
