Hedge laying is the practice cutting, folding and weaving of a living hedge to create a good barrier and to regenerate the hedge. It is an ancient process for maintaining and enhancing these vital habitats in our countryside. This one day practical course will look at:
- The species of hedge plants best for laying.
- The process of cutting to lay, staking in place and top weaving.
- Timings for the work and the practicalities of handling the mass of brush that inevitably is taken out from the hedge.
- Safe handling of tools and full explanation of each part of the process will be given.
Tutor: Richard King
Richard King trained as a biologist specialising in environmental science and this led him to understand the importance of eco-sustainable industries. He has spent over 10 years as a professional green wood worker and furniture maker with his work being in high demand across East Anglia.

What to bring
- This is a winter activity in a rough thorny environment so wear good boots and strong clothes.
- Strong leather gloves and if you have them some eye protection is worth having.
- Axes, bill hooks, pruning saws and loppers will be supplied but do bring your own if have any.
