‘Not conforming to a regular or formal structure or shape’ this one day intensive course explores wider notions of drawing seen in contemporary art today. Over the day we will explore ways of identifying with the landscape of Flatford, considering drawing as both an enquiry and a visual language to explore. This open-level course is designed for those who enjoy experimenting, free expression and the conceptual processes of image making. Embolden your drawing!
The day will comprise of three distinct drawing activities requiring a different approach and different material use. The tone of the day will be both thoughtful and stimulating. Referencing the work of contemporary artists will inform our drawing decisions and discussions as we review our drawing output along the way. The value of ‘Process’ will be central to our day together.
Tutor: Jevan Watkins Jones
Jevan's teaching approach is simultaneously gentle and rigorous. He is an alumnus of the Royal Drawing School where he received First Prize for his drawings from city farms. His drawing practice ranges from sensitive and energetic studies of plants and people in the landscape to working on long term collaborative drawing projects with communities such as Facing-Recovering with injured soldiers. Jevan has a very active enjoyment of gardens, plants and the natural world. This course offers an opportunity to benefit from his two great passions.

Before You Attend
What to Bring
- Please bring your preferred drawing materials such as pencils, charcoal and pastels and including wet materials such as Indian ink, coloured ink and watercolour to compliment dry materials.
- Any necessary hand tools ie. brushes, pencil sharper/craft knife, erasers, bull dog clips, masking tape etc.
- Gouache and acrylic paint is also possible for use in the studio, please bring these.
- In addition, make sure you have plenty of paper and a good range of sizes, rough, smooth and coloured papers if desired. If you can, buy professional art materials rather than student quality.
- A range of drawing boards is provided as well as table easels for the studio. Please bring your own field easel if required.
- You may also wish to bring a cushion for outdoor use (with waterproof cover) as well as clothes for all weathers if determined to duck and dive any rain and an apron/smock with pockets is always useful of course.
- Fingerless gloves for winter work is a must!
Note: the Tutor will have a limited range of materials including masking tape, charcoal and Fabriano cartridge paper on 10m x 1.5m rolls that can be bought at cost price for any larger work undertaken. Please note: for one day courses bring a smaller selection if you'd prefer.
