An exploration of inter-tidal and coastal habitats and wildlife along Somerset’s diverse coastline.
This course will explore a range of different ecosystems along the Somerset coast, including rocky shores and coastal fringe terrestrial habitats. The ecology of key communities and species will be investigated and identification skills for some of common groups of organisms will be developed. With an increasing awareness of the importance of the ocean in climate cycles and in maintaining biodiversity, the course will also discuss some of the issues affecting marine environment locally and globally. The course will be accessible for all levels and no prior knowledge is expected, just a passion for finding out more about marine ecology. Some of the shores we will visit can be difficult to negotiate for those with mobility issues with loose boulders and pebbles and slippery surfaces to clamber over.

Tutor: Mark Ward
Mark Ward: Mark has a PhD in Marine Biology and has over 30 years of experience in as an environmental educator specialising in marine and coastal habitats. For most of his career Mark worked for the Field Studies Council as an education tutor and manager at Nettlecombe, in Pembrokeshire and in various national FSC roles supporting and training other staff. He currently works for Somerset Wildlife Trust as manager of the Somerset Brilliant Coast project which aims to engage communities with Somerset diverse coastal landscapes and environments. Mark has co-authored several publications including the FSC Rocky Shore fold-out chart.
