Urban geography fieldwork takes learning into the real world. By exploring our towns and cities we can look at urban regeneration, sustainability, land use and more, to see what they are really like first hand.

It also develops useful geographical skills including mapping and GIS, survey design, data collection, site analysis and photographic documentation.

To support teachers and students with urban geography we are excited to introduce two new video resources, developed in partnership with Time for Geography, University of Sheffield, and University of the West of England, focusing on Urban fieldwork techniques in human geography.

These two videos explore qualitative and quantitative research techniques. The first looks at the benefits of qualitative research, and showcases two key methods on location in Ipswich, while the second focuses on at a powerful quantitative tool for investigating the geographical impacts of urban change.

Qualitative fieldwork in human geography: Re-photography and soundscape analysis

Quantitative fieldwork in human geography: Pedestrian analysis

This new urban series joins our other geography resource videos created as partners of Time for Geography, an excellent resource website for geographers.

Our own website also hosts a selection of free urban geography resources covering key topics from 14-18 years. You’re able to select the area of geography you are interested in and find support with planning fieldwork and routes to enquiry.

Urban geography fieldwork opportunities in Birmingham and London

Bringing learning into urban environments helps students experience human geography in a real-world context. We enjoy hosting fieldwork groups in towns and cities, especially through our dedicated provision in Birmingham and London

We are proud to be working with Birmingham City Council to deliver high-quality environmental education across several of the city’s parks. This expands our teaching provision in the city, which is already offering courses across a number of urban locations. From June 2025 we are delivering fieldwork in local Birmingham parks including Cannon Hills Park, Lickey Hills Country Park and Sutton Park.

In London we have very well-established fieldwork locations, some in partnership with The Royal Parks, offering a wide programme of urban geography fieldwork and outdoor learning days. We have been delivering school learning opportunities in the capital for over 20 years.

Please contact us to discuss learning opportunities.
