We’re pleased to share that our 2025 Streamlined Energy and Carbon Report (SECR) shows continued progress in reducing Field Studies Council’s carbon emissions and advancing our environmental goals.

Our market-based Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions fell to 578.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) in 2025, down from 637.6 tCO₂e in 2024, a reduction of ~9%.

Our renewable energy contract ensures we maintained zero Scope 2 emissions.

Carbon efficiency improved across several key measures:

  • CO₂e emissions per attendee reduced by around 12%
  • CO₂e emissions per customer day reduced by around 10%
  • CO₂e emissions per £/income reduced by around 6%

We remain on track to achieve our Science Based carbon reduction targets.

With a reduction of 59 tCO₂e in 2025, we are significantly exceeding our annual reduction target of 20 tCO₂e.

These results reflect the efforts of staff across the organisation. Every action that helps reduce energy use, improve efficiency and support low-carbon travel contributes to our progress. The reductions were achieved through a combination of:

  • Lower use of mains gas, propane and oil to heat our buildings.
  • Kitchen electrification projects
  • Energy efficiency initiatives
  • Improvements to carbon data quality and reporting

As renewable electricity is already delivering substantial benefits, our biggest opportunities for future carbon reductions come from reducing our direct use of fossil fuels.

Priorities include:

  • Further decarbonising heating systems.
  • Continuing the electrification of equipment and facilities.
  • Integrating more EVs to further reduce fleet transport emissions

While fleet emissions increased during 2025, the introduction of 10 electric vehicles over winter 2025 is expected to contribute to significant reductions in 2026.

We’re excited about the impact we’re making and what comes next!
