The Field Studies Council provides CPD and/or informal training for your staff, customers, volunteers, and communities.

Our dedicated team of expert training co-ordinators, content creators and highly skilled tutors can deliver specialised training on a range of biodiversity, conservation, and environmental topics, including species identification, biodiversity net gain, habitat surveying, biological recording and ecological monitoring.

We have a wealth of training coordination and facilitation experience, so we can manage the whole training package seamlessly, including:

Why the Field Studies Council

We have over 80 years’ experience as an environment education charity, and have previously provide training for a range of organisations, including Natural England, Natural Resources Wales, The Wildlife Trusts, South West Water, the Environment Agency, the National Trust, and many more.

Many charities also collaborate with us to embed training within grant applications and project plans to help meet learning and engagement objectives with project beneficiaries. We have an extensive catalogue of existing courses, which your organisation can book onto as a group for a discounted price, we can run on-demand on a date that suits you, or we can tailor to create a bespoke training package for your organisation.

The Field Studies Council also has 100+ existing field guides and identification keys to support your project and bespoke options.

Group bookings

We have a huge range of scheduled in-person and online courses throughout the year, which we can book your group onto at a special discounted price.

For in-person courses, there is a 10% discount for groups over 10 people. For online courses, the bigger the group, the bigger the discount, please see below for the details.

Online courses discount rates (correct as of January 2026) *:

10 – 19 people: 10% discount
20 – 29 people: 20% discount
30 – 50 people: 30% discount
50+: please enquire

On-demand training

We also offer on-demand runs from our pre-existing programme of online and in-person courses, meaning we can host them at a venue, date, and time that would be most suitable for your group/s and/or organisation. An on-demand run would also mean your group would have exclusive access to the course, and tutor (where applicable).

If you are a charity, let us know! We may be able to offer a discount on your on-demand booking.

Bespoke training

If you organisation has unique or specialist training requirements that aren’t currently covered by our existing courses, we can work with you to develop bespoke training that will meet all your training requirements and objectives. This training could be in-person, online, or a combination of both.

Previously we have worked with Worcestershire County Council to provide upskilling 50 of their staff, providing them with bespoke Biodiversity Net Gain training. We enhanced our existing BNG for reviewers’ course, created in consultation with Natural England and Costain, to correspond to the councils’ specific needs, included how BNG integrates with green infrastructure and building confidence in officers to challenge unrealistic proposals.

We also partnered with the Woodland Trust to produce Priority Open Habitat courses. These were designed to support their staff and other professionals in the sector, by embedding the processes and principles in their woodland creation guidance and improving botanical identification and survey skills.
