Unleash your creativity and apply it to simple printing techniques!

Join the course and discover how to produce simple prints by using a variety of materials and methods from basic starting points. The course will teach you how to use a wide range of printing materials: taken from nature, making a collograph, monoprinting, press printing, using a gel plate, and block printing.

The course is split into easily manageable tutor-supported sessions, and will enable you to create sets of prints, unique to you. Your starting point might be taken from a photograph, or be purely abstract.

There are many different effects that can be achieved by combining these techniques and by printing on prepared surfaces such as:

  • Gel plate prints using torn or cut paper shapes and natural materials
  • Tissue collage with overlays
  • Watercolour powder on paper
  • Random roller printing using natural materials
  • Using different colour and textured paper
  • Printing onto fabric

You can also use these methods to create your own greeting cards and there will be an opportunity to try this out during the course

About the tutor

Sue originally trained as a textile designer and has continued to expand her artistic skills using many different media. She has taught these skills to both adults and secondary school students for over 36 years during which time she was Art Adviser for Bexley Education Authority.

She has continued to run workshops at the Flatford Mill centre in Suffolk since 1990. Much of her work records the landscape loved by John Constable which continues to inspire her today. In 2000, she exhibited one of her paintings at the Flatford Mill Millenium exhibition alongside one of John Constable’s original pieces!

She is an accomplished watercolour artist but also works with printmaking methods, sometimes combining the two. Sue has developed an experimental approach to printmaking by incorporating mixed media, drawing, and a variety of unusual printing techniques. Sue regularly exhibits her work in local galleries. About Flatford Mill

We have four buildings that are used for visitor accommodation. Whilst most rooms are either en-suite or have a dedicated bathroom, there are some rooms in The Mill that share showers and toilets at the end of the hall. If this is un-suitable for you please make the office staff aware upon booking or as soon as possible.

Please be aware that you are visiting a Field Centre that caters in the main for school parties; the accommodation is basic and dormitory style, but warm and comfortable.

Explore our range of craft courses hosted by our engaging tutors and learn from their expertise and skills. Our art courses are a chance to meet like-minded people and a chance to unwind from everyday life. They are a great opportunity to experience the UK’s glorious countryside surrounding our field centres.

This course is open to participants aged 18 and over only. For under-18s, please contact the centre directly or see our young people courses and activities for families.
