Island Environmental Exploration and Adventure is a five-day residential experience for P4–P7 pupils that brings outdoor learning, environmental discovery, sustainability and teamwork together in one exciting island-based adventure.
Set in the distinctive surroundings of Millport, the course gives pupils the chance to explore new places, ask questions about the natural world, and build confidence through practical activities, fieldwork and shared challenges.
Across the week, pupils investigate coastal and land habitats, search rock pools, identify minibeasts, learn about food chains and adaptations, and think about how people can care for special places like islands and coastlines. They also take part in active challenges such as orienteering, bushcraft, coastal games and team problem-solving, helping them develop communication, cooperation and resilience in a safe and supportive residential setting.
By combining hands-on science with adventure, creativity and reflection, this programme helps younger learners see how STEM, sustainability and outdoor skills connect to their everyday lives. Pupils leave with memorable experiences, stronger teamwork skills, greater independence, a deeper connection to nature, and simple actions they can take back to school and home to make a positive difference.

Day 1
Discovering Millport and ourselves
Morning
Travel and Ferry crossing. Sense of place begins with pre-course task for journey.
Centre induction and rooming.
Afternoon
Island Orientation Hike. Introduction to the amazing, exciting Island of Millport, use map skills, navigation and teamwork in mini challenges to explore the surrounding landscape.
Four capacities
- Confident Individuals – pupils will begin to build confidence in a novel environment and learn about themselves and their surroundings.
- Effective Contributors – pupils will work together in teams, building cooperation, communication and teamwork skills through challenges.
Evening
Coastal games & group challenge. Ice-breakers, low risk outdoor problem solving and team building to develop cooperation.

- Effective contributors – pupils will work in groups to solve problems, identifying their own contributions
Day 2
Habitat discovery
Morning
Rock pooling investigation. A rock pooling extravaganza with crab hunts, species identification, and fun activities linked to food chains and adaptations. Conduct a beach litter pick and visit the onsite aquarium with expert guide.

- Successful learners – pupils will learn from curriculum links in Science especially covering the biodiversity and independence knowledge.
- Responsible citizens – pupils will conduct litter picks and think about our impact on coastlines, especially considering the special nature of the Island.
Afternoon
Minibeast safari. Sampling skills and invertebrate hunting in different habitats around the beautiful centre. What lives under logs, in bushes and in ponds and how are they adapted to survive.
Four capacities
- Confident individuals – pupils will build confidence through games and activities, building on the morning’s knowledge they will plan their own sampling in groups.
- Successful learners – pupils will learn from curriculum links in Science especially covering the biodiversity and independence knowledge.
Evening
Orienteering. Working as a team to learn and use orienteering skills such as map reading to find hidden answers around the centre – which team will score the most points.

- Effective contributors – pupils will contribute in teams to activities and share ideas and knowledge.
Day 3
Activity day
Adventurous activities to choose from include: archery, rock climbing and raft building or buggy build. Developing team building and communication skills as well as pushing personal limits and developing confidence.

- Confident individuals – pupils will be challenged to work together and overcome risk, growing in confidence as they achieve.
- Effective contributors – pupils will work in groups to solve problems, identifying their own contributions and relying on others.
Evening
What wanders at night / mall mammal trapping. How do animals survive at nighttime? Students use all their senses to explore the nighttime environment, make humane traps for small mammals, and use technology such as camera traps and bat detectors to try and detect nocturnal creatures!

Day 4
Climate and sustainability
Wilderness bushcraft. Could you survive in the wilderness? Using ancient techniques, we will learn how to fend for ourselves in the wilderness during a number of bushcraft tasks, including fire-lighting, long distance communicating and shelter building.

- Responsible citizens – pupils will consider the impact of modern life on the world and how to live more sustainably.
Afternoon
Sustainability challenge. Through a series of STEAM games and challenges pupils will investigate sustainable design, renewable energy and the impact of tourism on the Island. They will be challenged to design a “Sustainable Millport”. Pupils will conduct a carbon footprint trail and make pledges for their own actions.

- Responsible citizens – pupils will consider sustainable uses of the islands resources and their own impact on the world making pledges for action
Evening
Reflective campfire. Pupils have the opportunity to reflect on their week, sharing highlights and challenges, songs and treats.

Day 5
Reflection and sharing
Morning
Presentation & celebration. Pupils spend time planning and then presenting posters or performances about their learning and what they are going to take back to do at school / home. An opportunity for sharing and celebration.

- Effective contributors – pupils will contribute in teams to activities and share ideas and knowledge.
Midday: depart centre after farewells.
