Field Studies Council has achieved another year of brilliant progress, cutting 2025 carbon emissions* by 9% compared to 2024. This builds on our long-term success, reducing emissions by 77.5% since 2011 and supports our recently approved Science Based Targets, which commit us to further reduce our emissions by 2034.

Find out more about our targets on the Science Based Targets initiative website below. Search ‘Field Studies Council’ in the Target Dashboard at the foot of the page.

“These brilliant results demonstrate the commitment of our staff and visitors to reducing our environmental impact. We are proud of the progress we’ve made and we’re focused on the work ahead as we continue to decarbonise our operations and work towards our Science Based Targets.”

Sam Thurston, Carbon & Energy Compliance Manager.

The details:

Our 9% reduction in carbon emissions equates to 59 tCO₂e, roughly equivalent to driving an average UK car 285,000 miles, enough to circle the Earth 11 times!

We reduced our tCO₂e emissions per visitor by 12% and our emissions per £/income by 6%.

Our recent reductions were achieved through a combination of:

  • Lower use of mains gas, propane and oil to heat our buildings
  • Kitchen electrification projects
  • Energy efficiency initiatives for example improved heating controls
  • Improvements to carbon data quality and energy reporting
  • Our renewable energy contract which helped us retain zero Scope 2 emissions

The future:

Our biggest opportunities for future carbon reductions come from reducing our direct use of fossil fuels and further electrification of our infrastructure. Priorities include:

  • Further decarbonising heating systems
  • Continuing the electrification of equipment and facilities
  • Integrating more EVs to further reduce fleet transport emissions

In 2026 we have already replaced 10 diesel minibuses with electric minibuses which will further reduce our 2026 and future carbon emissions.

These superb results reflect the huge efforts of our staff and our visitors to make a difference. Every action that helps reduce energy use, improve efficiency and support low-carbon travel contributes to our progress.

We’re excited about our progress in reducing emissions, our impact and where this journey will take us next.
