We can offer a wide range of marine terrestrial and freshwater habitats, including a range of rocky shore exposures, salt marsh and sand dunes, woodlands and grasslands, and various streams, lakes and ponds under a range of different abiotic influences.
We can give you access to field equipment from sampling kit to more unique equipment such as moth traps and you can use our grounds to study a wide range of flora and fauna throughout the year. With this our unique habitats and access to research libraries and data sets from our courses and centre records, a wide range of projects and studies can be undertaken at our centres.
For Marine Biology Specifically we can also show examples of marine conservation management and conflicts and host more specialist marine courses such as fish parasitology and marine microbiology.
At Millport and Dale Fort sea mammal and bird surveys can be carried out. Millport has a sea-going research vessel for carrying out benthic sampling and Dale Fort has access to boat hire for collecting plankton and other near shore samples.

All our courses offer:
- High quality field sites – either within walking distance or a short drive away
- Fully risk assessed field sites with prior access agreements for all Field Studies Council delivery
- Well equipped, WiFi enabled classrooms, lecture rooms and laboratories
- Range of field equipment, microscopes and species identification guides
Course content on university trips can be entirely taught by our staff or co-taught with university staff whilst tutors are able to lead the fieldwork component or to provide specialist lectures. Alternatively, courses can be completely self-taught by university staff using our centres as a base. You are welcome to a free pre-visit to help plan your course.
