Practical advice and demonstrations will be given in preparing painting surfaces, painting techniques with acrylic and oil paint and composition.
Painters will also be involved in discussions on colour temperature, aerial perspective and focal points within a painting. One to one discussions will be available as well as an optional open critic on Saturday evening.
Included in this course will be a visit to Benton End, the former home of The East Anglian School of Art. Students will be able to spend time in the extensive grounds of this beautiful house, with time to study, enjoy and create before returning to Flatford.
About the tutor
Mike Roberts
I have been painting at Flatford Mill for over ten years, firstly as a supporting art tutor for 6th form students and later, independently, with friends and acquaintances who have all come to love the peace and tranquillity that Flatford Mill offers. Every year Flatford Mill and the surrounding area continues to offer inspiration for the practice of ‘En Plien Air’ painting.
I completed my foundation year at Lincoln College of Art in the late 80’s before moving to London and completing a Fine Art Degree at North East London Polytechnic later going on to St Martins College of Art. After over 20 years of working in Film, Theatre and Dance I retrained as Design and Technology teacher and in time came to develop my own artistic interests. Supported by a rich and active artistic community in the Weald of Kent I have shown work in many galleries and art shows in the area.
About Flatford Mill
We have four buildings that are used for visitor accommodation. Whilst most rooms are either en-suite or have a dedicated bathroom, there are some rooms in The Mill that share showers and toilets at the end of the hall. If this is unsuitable for you please make the office staff aware upon booking or as soon as possible.
Please be aware that you are visiting a Field Centre that caters in the main for school parties; the accommodation is basic and dormitory style, but warm and comfortable.
Explore our range of mixed media courses or oil and acrylic painting courses. They are hosted by our engaging tutors enabling you to learn from their expertise and skills. Our art courses are a chance to meet like-minded people and a chance to unwind from everyday life. They are a great opportunity to experience the UK’s glorious countryside surrounding our field centres.
