Discover the technique of the ancient Indonesian craft of Batik. Learn how to use the fascinating art of beautiful batik in this creative, hands-on workshop. This traditional textile technique uses melted wax and dye to create beautiful patterns and layered designs on paper, cotton fabric and silk.
During the workshop you will learn how to apply wax to a variety of surfaces. You’ll do this on both paper and cloth using simple tools, creating areas that resist the dye and form intricate patterns. You’ll then explore how to add colour in layers to build depth to create exciting effects in your design. If you choose to, the later addition of embroidery, Gota and bead work can further enhance your design work.

This course offers plenty of opportunity to experiment with pattern, colour, and texture, allowing you to develop your own unique pieces of work. You may choose to create a decorative fabric panel, small textile artworks, decorate your own silk scarf or make fabric pieces that can later be incorporated into other projects.
Working on paper can also produce some wonderful decorative opportunities for further use such as card making, wrapping paper or one-off art pieces.
Working with wax and dye is a wonderfully absorbing process, and this course is designed to be relaxed and supportive, with guidance throughout as you explore the technique.
All materials and tools are provided, but a small charge will be made for fabrics supplied. y the end of the session you will have created your own handmade batik fabrics to take home.
The course is open to absolute beginners! Create and enjoy!
About the tutor
Sue originally trained as a textile designer and has continued to expand her artistic skills using many different media. She taught these skills to both adults and secondary school students for over 36 years during which time she was Art Adviser for Bexley Education Authority. She has continued to run workshops at the Flatford Mill centre in Suffolk since 1990. Much of her work records the landscape loved by John Constable which continues to inspire her today. In 2000, she exhibited one of her paintings at the Flatford Mill Millenium exhibition alongside one of John Constable’s original pieces!
She is an accomplished watercolour artist but also works in mixed media as well as textiles, printmaking and drawing, sometimes combining them to create original and unusual artwork.
Sue enjoys experimenting and this can be clearly seen in her work. She regularly exhibits mainly watercolour paintings in local galleries. She continues to teach art and craft workshops for adults as part of a local mental health arts project.

About Flatford Mill
Residential accommodation at Flatford Mill is provided within our historic Grade I listed buildings. Rooms are clean, comfortable and functional, but are intentionally simple and should be considered field centre accommodation rather than hotel-standard accommodation. Many guests value the character and heritage of the site, although facilities reflect the age and nature of the buildings.
Whilst most rooms are either en-suite or have a dedicated bathroom, there are some rooms in The Mill that share showers and toilets at the end of the hall. If this is unsuitable for you please make the office staff aware upon booking or as soon as possible.
Please be aware that you are visiting a Field Centre that caters in the main for school parties; the accommodation is basic and dormitory style, but warm and comfortable.
Explore our range of craft courses and traditional skills courses hosted by our engaging tutors and learn from their expertise and skills. Our art courses are a chance to meet like-minded people and a chance to unwind from everyday life. They are a great opportunity to experience the UK’s glorious countryside surrounding our field centres.
This course is open to participants aged 18 and over only. For under-18s, please contact the centre directly or see our young people courses and activities for families.
