Join us in Constable country for this creative writing workshop with Helen Finch. Taking inspiration from the outdoor areas and history at Flatford Mill, we will look at using our senses and descriptive words to create a piece of writing or poetry.

We will use a mind map, group discussions and a variety of short tasks to create and expand ideas which will formulate the start of a short story, novel or poem. You’ll use different techniques to create characters, scenes and scenarios by combining the surrounding landscape, nature and history.

Whether you have written before or are a novice to creative writing, there is a genre for you to explore and expand on.

About the tutor

Helen Finch

Helen Finch’s work encompasses a range of different published writing; from books covering oral history, walks and traditional crafts, articles incorporating a variety of subjects and short stories for adults and children, published both in the UK and overseas. At present she is collaborating on a WW1 film script.

She has developed her practice over the last 25 years but has always been inspired to write from a young age. She is the Chair of the Brentwood Writers’ Circle, tutored creative writing for both adults and children and is a book reviewer for several outlets and publishers. Helen is also an avid reader and will devour a variety of genres, even children’s books.

Most of her inspiration stems from spending time exploring the countryside and coastline of Britain. However, history also plays a part in her books and articles; using oral history stories, her genealogy or using physical objects to spark an idea or a combination to influence a work of fiction. Her belief is that everywhere there are stories to be told – you just have to unlock them.
