We will look at a number of compositional tools to construct an image that has real impact.

The morning is classroom based where we will look at a number of images and work out why these pictures grab the viewer and keep them interested.

In the afternoon these concepts will be put into practice on location around Flatford Mill which is a beautiful location for photography. We will also discuss how the quality of light affects the mood of an image. How does the direction, colour temperature and intensity of light affect the photograph and how can we best use these qualities to produce an image with real mood and atmosphere.

I will also cover the some of the technical aspects of photography such as creative use depth of field, correct exposure, the exposure histogram, white balance and exposure compensation.

This course is suitable for the complete beginner through to an intermediate level of photographer. If you are a more advanced photographer technically I think you would still benefit massively from this course if you find composition tricky.

A big focus for this course is creating strong images from a compositional point of view.

Last, but not least, all my photography courses are run in a relaxed atmosphere because I think people learn more if they are enjoying themselves during the learning experience.

Refreshments are included, but please bring lunch with you.

About the tutor

Steve Hedges

During my career I have photographed a wide variety of subjects including public relations photography, commercial photography, portrait and wedding photography as well as landscape and nature photography.

I am qualified with the Master Photographer’s Association and the Royal Photographic Society. I have been shortlisted in the Outdoor photographer of the Year competition in 2011, 2014, and 2015 and in the British Wildlife Photographer of the Year three times, the last time being in 2022.

For many years, along with my normal photographic assignments I have been running a variety of photography courses and workshops. I find it immensely rewarding helping students to reach their full potential as photographers. I was hugely pleased to have been asked by Field Studies Council to run a photography course for them at Flatford Mill.

Whilst most rooms are either en-suite or have a dedicated bathroom, there are somerooms in The Mill that share showers and toilets at the end of the hall. If this isun-suitable for you please make the office staff aware upon booking or as soon as possible.

Please be aware that you are visiting a Field Centre that caters in the main for school parties; the accommodation is basic and dormitory style, but warm and comfortable.
