The AIM Qualifications Leader in Outdoor Learning Level 2 gives those who wish to bring learning into an outdoor environment the skills, understanding and confidence to do this.

Learners must complete a total of 7 credits to achieve this qualification.

Benefits of Outdoor Learning

Using the latest research you will discover the impact and benefits of outdoor learning. You will learn how outdoor learning enhances a child’s wellbeing and life skills and how the latest research con be incorporated into your own outdoor sessions.

Learning in the Natural Environment

You will gain the skills and knowledge to enable you to deliver outdoor learning sessions with links to the curriculum. You will plan your own 3 outdoor learning activities. You will look at the role of adults in supporting outdoor learning and create a curriculum plan related to your own site.

Engaging Children with Local Wildlife

You will learn about local wildlife enabling you to deliver outdoor sessions that support children’s natural curiosity. You will learn good practice for engaging children with local wildlife. Identify wildlife resources in your own locality and take part in hands on wildlife identification, building your own skills and confidence.

Health and Safety in the Natural Environment

You will gain the knowledge and skills to keep yourself and others safe whilst delivering outdoor learning sessions. You will understand the hazards and risks associated with outdoor learning. You will be able to carry out site and risk benefit assessments for your own outdoor learning sessions. As well as what procedures you will need in place and how to write these.

Using and improving the School Grounds and the Natural Environment

You will learn how to implement good practice in using and improving the school grounds and natural environments you work in. You will identify the barriers to outdoor learning and how to overcome these. You will explore how to develop your grounds and how to enhance the natural environment and benefit wildlife and learning.

Assessment method

Portfolio of evidence to be submitted and practical elements signed off during the training.

All work can be submitted via our online training platform or in a physical folder via post.

As part of this qualification, you must deliver outdoor learning sessions at your setting.

Trainers

Our training team are very experienced and have spent many years working in the outdoor environment in a range of settings and scenarios. We have been delivering Forest School training and outdoor learning CPD at our Bishops Wood Centre since 2007, training many people from across the UK and from Europe.

Our trainers are available to offer support throughout the course and can be contacted by email or phone to answer your questions or support you further if needed.

Example Timetable

The course involves 3 days of face to face training from 9am - 5pm each day. During these 3 days you will be given all of the information and skills to complete your portfolio of evidence.

Please note the qualification takes approximately 4 months to complete from the first day of training.

Before You Attend

Prior to the training you will need to complete 3 forms and return them to Bishops Wood Centre for checks.

  • Learner registration form.
  • Medical consent form.
  • Photographic consent form.

In order to be registered on the course you must provide official photographic ID, such as a driving licience or passport to confirm your full name. You will need to bring this with you on the first day of training.

A lot of the course is run outdoors so please bring appropriate clothing for the time of year.
