This portraits for improvers in graphite and charcoal course is designed for artists with some portrait drawing experience. This course will help you take your skills to the next level. You’ll develop your understanding of proportion, perspective, tone, texture and graphite and charcoal techniques. You’ll do this alongside learning how to observe more effectively to capture the character of your subject.

About the tutor
Josephine Kingsford
Josephine Kingsford is a local artist who has her own studio in Wivenhoe, and who has exhibited both solo and as part of an art collective for some years.
She is an experienced and enthusiastic teacher who believes in creating a pleasurable and motivational atmosphere in the classroom, making learning a pleasure, and enabling students to achieve their potential.
About Flatford Mill
Residential accommodation at Flatford Mill is provided within our historic Grade I listed buildings. Rooms are clean, comfortable and functional, but are intentionally simple and should be considered field centre accommodation rather than hotel-standard accommodation. Many guests value the character and heritage of the site, although facilities reflect the age and nature of the buildings.
Whilst most rooms are either en-suite or have a dedicated bathroom, there are some rooms in The Mill that share showers and toilets at the end of the hall. If this is unsuitable for you please make the office staff aware upon booking or as soon as possible.
Please be aware that you are visiting a Field Centre that caters in the main for school parties; the accommodation is basic and dormitory style, but warm and comfortable.

Before You Attend
What to bring
- A range of artists' graphite pencils: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B and 8B
- A range of charcoal pencils: light, med and dark
- A couple of good-quality white charcoal pencils or white pastel pencils
- A stump (torchon) for blending, and a piece of small rag which can be used for blending
- An A4 sketchpad of tinted paper, including some grey and black paper, suitable for graphite and charcoal. It does not have to be suitable for waterbased mediums but paper with slight texture/grain is better for charcoal.
- A kneadable eraser
- An eraser with a fine point: this can be a pencil eraser, which can be sharpened or an electric eraser
- An apron
