Nature Studies Subsidy

Thanks to funding from the Foyle Foundation and Swire Trust, we can offer 250 free places on a range of our online courses to young people aged 18 – 25.

We want to provide young people with more opportunities to access nature-based training. The Nature Studies Subsidy supports young people’s attendance on our courses, intending to equip and upskill the next generation of conservationists. Experience from our courses can help them to take on volunteer and professional roles in the green economy.

Why we’ve developed the Nature Studies Subsidy

The Field Studies Council helps remove barriers to accessing biodiversity knowledge and skills. Our charity upskills people aged 18-25 to take on volunteer and professional roles in the green economy.

Young people tell us they can’t access the training they need for their environmental career, so we’ve created the subsidy to help.

We enable people to record and care for the natural environment, including habitat surveys required for Biodiversity Net Gain requirements.

Our offer and feedback is based on young people involved in Field Studies Council’s Youth Council and our five-year inclusion programme funded by the National Lottery.

Support young people

There is huge demand from young people for Field Studies Council training.

We were far over-subscribed in 2021/22 when we offered 1,000 subsidies as part of our national ‘Generation Green’ project.

Our subsidies are reliant on donations, sponsorships and grant fundraising.

Field Studies Council costs are based on the number of subsidies for in-person and online training courses. Subsidies range from £30-100 each.

Our preference in sponsorship for groups of 100 subsidies.

Current youth opportunities

We have lots of opportunities and resources for 16-25’s focused on the environment and helping the next generation to learn about and be inspired by the world around us.

We support young people with developing their skills and training to help with studies and careers in the environmental sector.
