Four of us attended the course which was expertly led by Nick Hodgetts. During the day we visited a wide variety of habitats including deciduous woodland, rocky streams, montane slopes/crags, open moorland and flushes, Sphagnum bog, disused limestone quarry, and domestic buildings and garden. On returning to Kindrogan, usually about 4.00pm, we spent an hour or so in the lab before breaking for the evening meal. We returned to the lab at about 7.00pm and worked through the various bryophytes that we’d collected during the day until about 9.00pm. During these evening sessions we received detailed tuition on bryophyte field and cellular characteristics, on taking tissue sections for microscopic examination, and on the use of various ID keys. Nick showed great patience throughout, and was quick to give individual guidance when needed. I enjoyed the course and learned a lot. I recommend it to anyone thinking of attending.
