I really enjoyed the weekend. I learned a lot about bryophytes, met some nice people and visited two wonderfully scenic locations. The course was expertly tutored by Theo Loizou whose knowledge, enthusiasm and patience were much appreciated. On the Friday evening we had an introductory talk and slide show. On the Saturday we visited a deciduous woodland in a river valley and the following day we investigated an area of Caledonian pinewood, heath and flushes. We were shown the main differences between the various groups of mosses and liverworts, with many being identified to species by Theo upon request. Walking was not arduous and we covered no more than a few kilometres. In the evenings we were shown how to use the microscopes and we keyed out some of the samples we had collected. Furthermore the accommodation was clean and warm, the food was good and plentiful and the staff were friendly and helpful.
