I am currently enrolled on the MMU UCert and have already completed two of my modules and have thoroughly enjoyed them.
I booked this course as an extra, not including it in my module credits. It was something that caught my eye and I was really looking forward to it. However, I was very disappointed with the course itself.
I did not feel that it was as described. The teaching from Irene was almost non existent, if it had not been for Janette who was helping I do not feel that I would have learnt anything. There was no background on fungi, no real explanation of family groups. There was no structure to the weekend, poor group leadership, no instruction of when the days would start/finish. When out on field trips, again there was no leadership to the point where Irene wandered off in the opposite direction without telling the group, no site induction or risk assessments, it was pretty much just a fungi foray for the weekend. I do not feel that there was any guidance in identifying the specimens we had collected during the field trips, we were left to our own devices in the lab and it was not pitched to the different levels of knowledge within the group. I feel I could have learnt more from attending one of my local groups outings at no cost. Overall I am very disappointed and am unhappy at the amount it cost to take part, including driving up from Sussex, and I am glad that I did not include this in my MMU course as I doubt I would have passed the assessments because of the lack in teaching.
