We stayed for 6 nights at Dale Fort. Unfortunately, it feels very run down and our overall impression is that they are trying to save as much money as possible. For example, we had to pay to hire towels, where they are given free at other sites. There are signs next to the cakes asking people to take one each, something I’ve not seen at any other location. The food portions are fairly small and while it was nice, the quality was not up to the standard we experienced at Snowdonia or Slapton Ley, there was also a lack of side dishes (such as salad). The fruit dished up for dessert one evening was tinned fruit, adding to feelings of a scant budget. The accommodation was really lacking, too. Few of the reading lights in our room worked. The student common room was very run down and smelly. We moved directly from Dale to Snowdonia and were quite overwhelmed by how much nicer the Snowdonia site is in terms of the quality of accommodation and food. Having said that, the staff at Dale were extremely helpful and the activities were excellent. We did enjoy our stay in spite of these negative points, but I think that the FSC has much better offerings elsewhere.
