Gain practical experience in biological skills and techniques.
Students will undertake small scale fieldwork projects using a range of equipment. Fieldwork will include site observations, local frequency measurements using quadrats, systematic sampling, random sampling and stratified sampling in grassland, woodland and freshwater habitats (habitats studied will depend on Centre booked).
Example Timetable
The following is an example of how this course might look. This course usually runs from 10am – 3pm, but times can be adjusted to suit your group and travel plans.
- Welcome and Introduction
- Setting and sharing objectives
- Introduction to working scientifically
Morning
Students will carry out mini investigations to become familiar with biotic and abiotic factors and equipment that can be used to measure them.
- Mini investigation 1: Systematic sampling
- Mini investigation 2: Random sampling
- Mini investigation 3: Stratified sampling
Afternoon
In small groups, students will plan their own investigations using the skills and habitat knowledge gained in the morning session.
Planning:
- make predictions
- plan a scientific enquiry to test predictions
Carry out an investigation:
- use appropriate techniques and equipment
- make and record observations and measurements
- identify organisms using keys
- measure abiotic factors
Analysis and evaluation: verbal data review to interpret observations and draw conclusions with reference to predictions made
Please note: specific timings and activities are subject to change. We go out in all weathers and seasons and will tailor the content of the day accordingly. There will be some variation between what is offered at specific centres due to habitat availability.
