Our proven model helps councils provide equitable access to outdoor learning opportunities while maintaining confidence in quality, governance and educational outcomes.

At the heart of our Scottish provision is Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae, a flagship centre with a strong track record of supporting young people through residential outdoor and environmental learning. Purpose-built for immersive outdoor experiences and supported by experienced professional staff, Millport offers accessible, high-quality provision for learners with a wide range of needs and abilities. Whether supporting ongoing delivery, expanding capacity, or providing continuity during periods of change, Field Studies Council offers local authorities a reliable, inclusive and scalable solution for residential outdoor education across Scotland.

Island Environmental Exploration and Adventure is a five-day residential experience that brings environmental science, geography, sustainability, outdoor adventure and teamwork together in one unforgettable island-based programme.

Designed for S1–S3 learners, the course uses the distinctive setting of Millport to help pupils develop a strong sense of place while building confidence, curiosity and practical skills through hands-on fieldwork, outdoor challenges and reflective learning.

Across the week, pupils investigate coastal and terrestrial habitats, explore biodiversity through rock pooling and minibeast sampling, consider human impacts through beach litter and sustainability activities, and take part in adventurous challenges such as orienteering, bushcraft, raft building or climbing. These experiences connect directly with science, geography, technology and health and wellbeing outcomes, while supporting the development of Scotland’s four capacities: successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.

By combining real-world environmental investigation with adventure, creativity and collaboration, this residential helps young people see the relevance of STEM, sustainability and outdoor learning in their own lives. Pupils leave with stronger teamwork and communication skills, greater resilience, a deeper connection to the natural world, and practical ideas for making a positive difference back at school and at home.
