Students will follow the route of enquiry to investigate an urban area.

They will consider background information, data collection methods that can be used when investigating an urban area. Fieldwork techniques will include investigating land use in different areas, pedestrian counts, traffic counts, environmental quality assessment, questionnaires.

Example Timetable

The course normally runs 10am – 3pm.  There will be an allocated lunch slot, the timing will depend on the final course programme.

Pre Visit / Prior Learning 

  • An awareness of the location being studied.
  • Awareness of the route to enquiry.

Introduction 

  • Welcome and Introduction
  • Setting and sharing Objectives
  • Discuss the route for enquiry
  • Introduction to the location to be studied, summarising the pre course work.

Morning / Afternoon 

  • Planning the fieldwork
    • In groups, plan the investigation including making predictions and methodology.
  • Fieldwork in two locations, or along a transect (Centre booked dependent) :
    • Carry out fieldwork data collection, including land use, pedestrian counts, traffic counts, environmental quality assessment, questionnaires.
    • Carry out qualitative fieldwork data collection including field sketch.
  • Analysis and evaluation
    • a verbal data review to interpret observations, draw conclusions, with reference to predictions.
