This practical, hands-on course is an introduction for beginners and will also welcome improvers who might appreciate the opportunity to expand their knowledge and develop their technique and creative ideas within a small group, under the supervision of an experienced tutor. Materials and methods will be introduced, and skills taught, to make and take home at least one piece of finished stained glass at the end of the weekend. Students should come prepared with an idea of what they want to make, either a drawing or a photograph of an image.
The tutor can help with ideas. You will learn to use copper foil and solder, using an electric soldering iron. We will not be learning the traditional lead method. Tools and equipment are provided and a selection of glass can be bought from the tutor as required. You should be prepared for extra expenditure of around £30-£40 depending on the size of the panel. Please note that the teaching element of this course may start before dinner on the Friday.
By the end of the weekend you should be able to:
- Draw a simple design and make a stained glass panel
- Be fully conversant with health and safety procedures whilst working with glass
- Cut glass in a confident manner and use a grinder to remove sharp edges
- Use a soldering iron to solder onto the copper foil.
- Finish your own unique piece of work
