This workshop is for anyone wanting to try their hand at the ancient craft of basketmaking.

In this workshop you will create one of the oldest styles of basket, used for centuries whilst foraging for fruit and berries. You will take away the knowledge you need to get started on your own. You will understand the materials you need and how to source them, be aware of the tools required, and have learned the skills needed to make one of the earliest styles of basket. In addition to having a new understanding of the craft and respect for the craftsmen and women of the past, you will have a beautifully organic basket to be used and enjoyed for many years to come.

This will be a relaxed workshop. There will be plenty of demonstrations and help will be on hand at every stage

Tutor: Jennifer Rowley

Jen is a creative workshop tutor who has been running hands-on, craft-led workshops for over five years. Her work is rooted in a deep love of natural materials and traditional making techniques, with a focus on slowing down, working with your hands, and enjoying the creative process.

With a university background in graphic design, Jen brings elements of her formal training into her workshops today, particularly through lino printing, block printing and screen printing. Her creative journey has taken many forms over the years, including working as a milliner, and she draws on a wide range of skills gained across several creative careers.

Jen was taught embroidery and dressmaking by her mother and grandmother, instilling a lifelong appreciation for textiles, craft heritage and passing skills from one generation to the next. This foundation continues to influence her approach to teaching and making.

She is passionate about working with natural and tactile materials, encouraging others to experiment, build confidence and enjoy creating in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Jen believes creativity should be accessible, enjoyable and rooted in curiosity, whether you’re a complete beginner or returning to making after time away.
