Volume 1: Sphaeriusidae to Silphidae
Since the publication of volume 1 in 2012, Andrew Duff’s Beetles of Britain and Ireland series has become the definitive beetle fauna for Britain and Ireland. It is the first comprehensive account since Joy’s A Practical Handbook of British Beetles, published in 1932.
Volume 1 features the overall key to beetle families useful for the entire series, and also:
- Keys to 887 species in 18 families, with family and genus introductions
- Detailed species notes including supporting characters, habitat, phenology, distribution and abundance
- A chapter on the minute and very difficult featherwing beetles is provided by expert guest author Michael Darby
These beetles include familiar whirligig, diving, ground and carrion beetles, as well as the ‘hydrophiloid’ group of water beetle families, hister beetles and others.
This is a 2025 reprint of the 2012 edition with minor amendments.
