How Field Studies Council supports SEND, ALN and ASN

At Field Studies Council, we believe every young person should have the opportunity to enjoy meaningful outdoor learning experiences, regardless of their background, ability, additional needs, or personal circumstances.

Our aim is simple: to help every learner participate, succeed, and feel included.

How Field Studies Council works with school groups to support learner needs

We know that every school group is unique. That’s why we work closely with teachers and group leaders before a visit to understand the needs of your students and identify any adjustments that may help them get the most from their experience. The earlier we can discuss your group’s requirements, and any SEND, ALN or ASN, the more effectively we can plan and adapt activities where needed.

Staff to support all learners

Our experienced tutors regularly support students with a wide range of needs, including physical disabilities, sensory impairments, neurodiversity, medical conditions, mental health needs, and learning differences. We take an inclusive approach to programme planning and delivery, seeking practical solutions that enable as many learners as possible to participate fully.

We are also a Disability Confident Committed employer.

How we make outdoor learning accessible

Across our network of field centres, we continually review and improve accessibility. Many centres offer accessible classrooms, accommodation, toilets and social spaces, while some locations provide quiet areas for learners who may benefit from a calmer environment. We also consider accessibility when selecting fieldwork sites and planning outdoor activities, adapting routes, equipment or learning approaches where possible.

Outdoor learning can look different for different learners, and that’s perfectly okay. Whether that means adjusting the pace of activities, providing alternative ways to engage with learning, offering additional support, or making reasonable adjustments to remove barriers, our goal is always to create a positive and rewarding experience for every participant.

While some of our historic buildings and outdoor environments can present challenges, we will always be honest about what is possible and work with you to find the most inclusive options available. Our teams are committed to helping schools plan visits that are safe, enjoyable and accessible for all learners.
