Join this teacher CPD session at the Greenwich Park Community Dig. Find out more about opportunities for schools to get involved in the Greenwich Park Revealed Project including free archaeology sessions, subsidised school trips (KS1, KS2 and KS3), new learning resources and the new Learning Centre.
During the session, you will take part in a similar session to the pupils, a real-life archaeology dig, getting your hands dirty, uncovering real objects then drawing and recording them. We will then share more about the plans for increasing learning opportunities for schools, and get your ideas on what you would like to see included.
Places are limited and must be booked in advance. The session runs 3.30pm to 5.30pm. If you can’t make the whole session you can drop in at any time.
The community archaeology dig will be looking for the remains of the Magnetic Observatory building in Greenwich Park. This building was an outlier to the main observatory, built in the 1890’s to house scientific instruments at a ‘magnetically neutral site’ so the scientific measurements would not be affected by their surroundings. The Magnetic Observatory was extended in 1914 to provide space to house a set of modern instruments. But it was demolished in the 1950’s, when the site was relocated to Abinger Bottom near Leith Hill. The land occupied by the Magnetic Observatory was returned to the Park and has not been investigated since! We hope to uncover the foundations of the buildings and learn more about the people that worked there.
