Free teacher training! Build your confidence and develop skills in outdoor learning practice through a hybrid programme of online webinars and an in-person residential training event taking place this winter.
The training is normally worth £299 but we are able to fully fund it, thanks to the legacy of the Nature Friendly Schools project we were part of.
The project included some of the UK’s leading outdoor learning and mental health and wellbeing organisations. The partnership was led by The Wildlife Trusts and supported by YoungMinds, Groundwork UK and the Sensory Trust. The project was funded by DEFRA and the Department of Education and supported by Natural England.
Research shows that 1 in 10 children do not regularly spend time outdoors. However, activities in nature have been shown to positively impact pupils’ mental health, wellbeing and their engagement with school. As part of the project, the National Centre for Social Research worked with us to understand why nature has this effect. Nature Friendly Schools is the largest ever research project of its type, and it has the potential to shape the way we view education as a nation.
Utilising the learning legacy of this project, Field Studies Council wants to make a difference to primary teachers by helping them get their students outdoors. Primary Outdoor Learning Programme is a project designed to recruit primary school teachers who are keen on engaging with outdoor learning but may lack confidence, skills or opportunities to pursue and include this in their scheme of work.

If your school is not a current Field Studies Council customer, and you will commit to completing this free programme, then you are eligible to sign up.

To register to take part in this exciting opportunity you need to do the following by 31st October 2022:

- Complete the checkout process. There is no cost. The programme is free of charge and no payment will be taken, but you will need to enter your details and checkout.
- We will then contact you to let you know if you have been successful.
By completing the registration you are confirming that:
- you are a primary school teacher.
- your school is not currently a Field Studies Council customer.
- you will attend the webinars and are able to travel to the overnight training at Preston Montford in Shropshire (SY4 1DX).
Frequently asked questions
Who can attend the free training programme?
The Primary Outdoor Learning Programme is open to primary school teachers who are not currently Field Studies Council customers. Places are limited and you must be able to attend the webinars and the in-person training in Shropshire.
We welcome multiple contacts at your school and encourage you to collaborate with your colleagues by taking part in the webinars using the same screen and login. Please note that we can only offer space for one person from each school to attend the in-person overnight residential training as we have limited space available.
Who can come on the overnight training?
The overnight session is just open for the successful applicants. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate any other family members or colleagues at the field centres.
Do I have to attend everything?
As this training programme is being fully funded we will only offer places to teachers able to commit to attending all the sessions.
