Create designs based on the autumn colours of late flowers, leaves and fruits.
This studio-based course, with a slant towards design, is equally suitable for beginners and those with some experience. The use of pencil, pen and ink, watercolour and gouache will be discussed. You are welcome to bring your own design project if you wish.
On Friday evening there will be an introductory ‘chat’ giving you a chance to talk through your individual objectives for the weekend. Following this, Jennifer will look through materials that course participants have brought with them.
During the rest of the weekend we shall be working to capture the beauty of wild and garden plants showing their autumn colours, either in “straight” paintings or designs according to preference. Those who wish to carry out a design idea will be able to take it through the various stages.
We will be based mainly in the studio where there will be talks and demonstrations on the use of watercolour, pencil, pen and ink, and gouache. Careful observation and the use of a sketchbook will be discussed. You are welcome to bring a selection of your work for constructive criticism and comment.

Jennifer Andrews trained at Oxford School of Art, followed by three years at the Royal College. She lives in Suffolk working as a freelance artist/designer. When she is not painting, Jennifer is gardening – she maintains the garden at Flatford and has created her own cottage style garden at home.

Before You Attend
What to bring
The list of equipment required for you to bring with you has been kept to a minimum, to keep down the expense for beginners until they have developed a ‘feel’ for what is needed. Your local art shop will help with any of the terms mentioned below which are unfamiliar. If you have painted before you are of course welcome to bring other materials not on the list.
Paper: Please bring three or more sheets of cartridge paper (Daler, Gold Line or Canson is recommended), size A3, weight not less than 180 gsm. Hot Pressed and Not surface paper, two or three sheets of each, any size. A spiral bound sketchbook A4 size or smaller. Various papers will be on sale from the tutor.
Drawing board with tape or clips. Boards can, however, be provided free of charge at the Centre.
Pencils: B, 2B, 4B and 8B.
Pens: Fibre tip pen fine grade, brown preferred.
Dip pen: A pen holder with flexible drawing nibs (suggest Gillotts 303), plus waterproof ink, brown preferred, and will all be available from the tutor.
Paints: Please bring whatever you have already. If buying from scratch Artists’ Quality watercolours are the best quality but a cheaper range is quite adequate. Reliable brands are Winsor & Newton, Rowney, Talens, Schmincke. You can bring tubes or pans according to preference.
Suggested colours from the Winsor & Newton Artists range are: French Ultramarine, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Cobalt Blue, Burnt Umber, Cerulean Blue, Burnt Sienna, Indigo, Light Red, Aureolin Yellow, Permanent Rose, Transparent Yellow, Scarlet Lake
A cheaper range would be Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolours, in any colours similar to the above.
Brushes: Two or three between numbers 2 and 10. These can be in sable, which is quite expensive, but the Pro-arte or Sceptre ranges are acceptable alternatives. One or two flat brushes, between 1/4” - 3/4”are useful.
Other items: Ruler; penknife or pencil sharpener; a soft rubber; a few cotton rags or J-cloth; and one sheet of tracing paper, A3 or A4 size.
Please also bring any cut flowers or pot plants you would particularly like to draw and paint, but plants will be provided for you as well.
